Spalding overcomes Mary Hardin-Baylor in ten innings, 4-3, for sixth straight victory

BELTON, Tex. – The Spalding University baseball team won their sixth straight game as they came from behind to defeat Mary Hardin-Baylor, 4-3 in ten innings. Chance Brinley (2-0) was credited with the win for the Golden Eagles. Korie Vire (3) earned the save. Cory Farr (0-2) was hit with the loss.
 
Kam Bruner had an excellent night going 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs, including the game-tying home run in the bottom of the eighth. Vire had a solid performance, going 2-for-5 with a run. Cody Stone went 4-for-4 with a walk for the Crusaders.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor got the scoring started in the bottom the second inning when Chase Burrow led off with a soaring solo-shot to left field for the 1-0 lead. Kyle Olliges would load the bases, but get out of the jam striking out Mitch Patterson. Spalding threatened in the top of the fourth, but stranded runners on second and third, unable to bring anyone home. The Crusaders added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back singles put runners on first and second before Matthew Mazoch doubled down the left field line, to bring in the man from second. After six innings, Mary Hardin-Baylor led, 2-0. Mary Hardin-Baylor led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner over to second. A wild pitch by Olliges advanced the runner to third, with no outs. A throwing error saw the man from third come home. Hayden Davenport was brought in with two outs and runners on first and second. Davenport was able to escape the inning, but Spalding trailed, 3-0. Spalding finally got on the board in the top of the eighth. Jacob Woodruff led off the inning with a walk. A single by Vire put runners on first and second. Both runners would advanced on a wild pitch to put two men in scoring position. Bruner stepped in and hit a no doubt home-run to right field to tie the game at 3-3. The Crusaders loaded the bases in the bottom half, but were unable to bring any of them in. The Golden Eagles took their first lead in the top of the tenth. Bruner doubled down the left field line. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and was sent home on a balk to put Spalding up, 4-3. Once again, Vire was called upon to close out the game and once again he was able to deliver as Spalding held on in extra innings.
 
Spalding continues their Texas tour Monday, March 14th in Austin when they take on Concordia University Texas. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 pm EST start time.
