Goeing drops 30 on senior day to lead SU past Blackburn, 97-64

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a dominant, 97-64 win over Blackburn College Saturday afternoon at Derek Smith Gymnasium.  With the win, the Golden Eagles finish 12-13 overall and 10-8 in conference play placing them in a four way tie with Eureka, Webster and Westminster for the final two spots in the 2016 SLIAC Tournament. The conference will announce the two teams that advance after the tiebreaker results have been confirmed.

Brandon Goeing paced the Golden Eagles with a game-high 30 points. The senior sharpshooter went 8-of-12 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Dominique Ellis added 21 points, his second highest scoring output of the season. James turner added 14 points and freshman Matt Jennelas scored a season-high 12 points on perfect 6-of-6 mark from the field. Chris Davis led the Beavers with 15 points.

The game stayed close early as the Golden Eagles and Beavers played to an 18-18 tie following a layup by Blackburn's Henry Hicks. That's when Goeing caught fire, scoring 11 consecutive points as part of a 15-2 run to push the Golden Eagles out front, 33-20, and the Golden Eagles would extend the lead to 16 points heading into the half leading 43-27.

The Golden Eagles didn't let up to start the second, ballooning their lead to 22 points following a 14-8 run capped off by a Nick Trisko jumper. The Beavers responded with a 10-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 14 points at, 59-45, prompting a Kevin Gray timeout. From there it was all SU as they rolled out to a 40 point lead on a Domo Ellis three-pointer to make the score 94-54, and the Golden Eagles rolled to a 97-64 victory.

If the Golden Eagles take one of the two spots in the SLIAC Tournament, they will play their semifinal game Thursday, February 25 at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill at either 7:00 or 9:00 p.m. EST.
