Golden Eagles struggle at Westminster falling, 72-48

FULTON, Mo. – The Spalding University women's basketball team fell, 72-48, to Westminster College Saturday evening. The Golden Eagles drop to 6-2 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

Maya Hardin and Kim Mingus led the Golden Eagles offensively, scoring 10 points apiece. Alex Martin added seven more, while Micaiah Bowden led the team in rebounds grabbing six boards.

In the first quarter, the score was tied 6-6 at the seven-minute mark but Westminster took and held onto the lead the rest of the game. SU made just 6-of-31 shots in the first half earning a shooting percentage of 19 percent. Free throws were a major factor as well; Westminster made 10-of-11, while SU made just one. Westminster's Mirrakohl Johnson and Mikalyn Callahan combined for 17 points helping to lead SU 36-14 at half.

The Golden Eagles cut the lead back down to 15 after a made three-point jumper by Mingus, and a layup by Mackenzie Myers at the four-minute mark in the third quarter. The Blue Jays answered with three consecutive three-pointers from Payton Beeler and Andrea Zalis to end the third quarter 30-56.

SU improved their field goal shooting to 40 percent in the second half, but Westminster maintained the lead with their three-point shooting ability. The Blue Jays shot 70 percent from behind the arc, earning seven threes in the second half, alone. The deficit proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome, ending the game 74-48.

Next, SU will host Transylvania University on December 20th at Derek Smith Gymnasium in Louisville, Ky. The Tuesday night game is set for 7 pm.
