TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Spalding University women's basketball team scored a season-high 99 points to top St. Mary of the Woods, 99-89, Wednesday evening in Terre Haute, Ind. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season and 1-1 in SLIAC play.
Alex Martin led all scorers with 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting,
Brandy Hunter added 21 points and
Mackenzie Myers recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles found themselves trailing, 26-24, after the first quarter. SU took an early 6-3 lead, but SMWC regained the lead and led 15-14 at the 4:55 mark. The Pomeroy's went on to score seven unanswered points capped off by a pair of Callan Taylor free throws as SU faced an eight-point deficit with 3:15 remaining in the quarter. An
Alex Martin three-pointer and a
Micaiah Bowden jumper in the lane cut the deficit to three. SMWC's Tara Parmer would push the lead back to five, but
Brandy Hunter knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to two at the end of one quarter.
Myers and Martin combined for 16 points to help SU outscore SMWC, 30-24, in the second quarter sending the Golden Eagles into halftime with a 54-50 lead. The two teams went shot for shot most of the quarter and were tied, 46-46, with 2:44 to play. However, a Bowden layup sparked a quick 6-0 spurt to put SU ahead, 52-46, with just under a minute to play. Each team would score on their final possessions with SMWC's Parmer hitting a jumper at the horn cutting the SU margin to four-points at the half.
Hunter started to heat up in the third quarter scoring eight points to help SU push their lead to seven points at 80-73 after three quarters. The Golden Eagles outscored SMWC 20-11 over the first 7:20 of the quarter extending their lead to 13 points following a Hunter layup in transition. Nevertheless, SMWC answered with a 12-6 run to close the period cutting the margin to seven on a Jordyn Lloyd layup at the buzzer.
Martin scored eight of her 25 points in the final period to help SU earn the 99-89 win. Hunter got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles knocking down a jumper on Spalding's first possession. A
Kim Mingus jumper in the paint pushed SU's lead to 17 points, their largest margin of the game, with 5:48 to play. From there, the Golden Eagles would remain in control, but the Pomeroy's would hit three-pointers on their last two possessions to cut the final margin to 10 points.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, December 17 when they resume SLIAC play traveling to Westminster College. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 pm EST.
