Golden Eagles cruise past Iowa Wesleyan, 66-57

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team earned their first SLIAC win of the season topping Iowa Wesleyan, 66-57, Saturday afternoon at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles improve to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Golden Eagles took an early lead performing well on the defensive side of the court. SU held Iowa Wesleyan to 7-of-27 shooting from the field, and forced eight turnovers. Lastella Slack led the way for the Tigers, earning 13 points in the first half. As a team, the Golden Eagles dominated the boards earning 28, while IWU grabbed 17. SU had production from ten different players, including 12 points scored off the bench. Brandy Hunter and Maddie Martin led the scoring for SU earning six points apiece to take a 34-22 lead at half.

Both teams improved their shooting in the second half as the Tigers fought to make a comeback. IWU improved to shooting 43 percent from the field while SU shot over 50 percent. Josie Zerrusen earned 13 points in the second half, alone, helping the Tigers get within nine points of the lead. However, two more made threes from Hunter sealed the victory for SU. Hunter ended the game with 14 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Maddie Martin who scored 11 points and grabbed six boards.

The Golden Eagles will be back on the court Wednesday, December 14 to face Saint Mary of the Woods College in Saint Mary of the Woods, Ind.
