LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team cruises past Centre College, 70-51, Tuesday evening at Derek Smith Gymnasium. With the win Spalding improves to 3-0 on the season, while Centre drops to 0-4.
Senior
Maya Hardin led the Golden Eagle offense scoring a game-high 16 points and passed out five assists. Sophomore guard
Alex Martin added 14 points, six assists and four rebounds, while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor.
Spalding led the game from start jumping out to a 6-0 lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Hardin and
Alex Martin. A
Brandy Hunter jumper would stretch SU's lead to 10 with 1:50 to go in the first quarter and Spalding would lead 16-7 after the first. The Colonels outscored SU 10-6 to start the second quarter cutting Spalding's lead to five following a Lakken Miller three-pointer. The Golden Eagles responded by closing the quarter on a 14-5 spurt capped off by a
Dee Dee Sliter three-pointer with four seconds to play taking a 36-22 lead into halftime.
Centre's Caroline Andreassen knocked down a jumper for the first basket of the second half, but Spalding answered big.
Alex Martin found Hardin for a layup in transition igniting a 16-3 run capped off by a
Lelanda Matthews free throw to push the lead to 25. After a Centre made jumper, MacKenzie Myers would drive for a layup and Hunter would knock down a jumper from beyond the arc to extend the margin to 28 points, SU's largest lead of the game, with 2:23 to play in the quarter and SU would head to final period leading 57-32. Alex Martin three-pointer to start the fourth and would cruise a 70-51 victory.
