ST. MARY'S, Md. – The Spalding University men's basketball team dropped their final game at the Dan Greene Memorial Tournament to tournament host St. Mary's, 73-67, in overtime. The loss drops Spalding's record to 0-2 on the season, while St. Mary's improves to 2-1.
The Golden Eagles offense was led by
Dominique Ellis,
Rylan Rowe and
James Turner. Ellis scored a team-high 19 points, while Rowe added 14 points and Turner tallied 12 points respectively.
Nick Trisko led SU on the boards hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds.
Spalding got off to a solid start, taking an early 4-2 lead following a Rowe jumper. SU pulled out front by four when a
James Abrams layup pushed the lead to 12-8 at the 10:39 mark. However, St. Mary's put together a 12-2 run capped off by a Delaszo Smith three-pointer to put the Seahawks ahead by 10 points with 6:03 to play in the half. St. Mary's would push their lead to 11 with 1:22 to go, but an Abrams layup in the final minute cut the deficit to nine points and SU went to the break trailing, 33-24.
The Seahawks got on the board first in the second half with a Darick Kerns jumper to push their lead to 11 points. Over the next five minutes, Spalding put together a 17-0 run fueled by eight points from Domo Ellis to take a 41-35 lead with 14:23 to play. After an exchange of baskets, freshman guard Josh McKenzie knifed to the rim for a fastbreak layup to extend the Golden Eagles lead to eight points. SU kept the margin at five points until the three and a half minute mark when Ochae Bynum drilled a three pointer to cut the lead to two igniting a 9-2 Seahawks run to put St. Mary's back in front, 57-55. A pair of Turner free throws knotted the score at 57 and
Owen Mumphrey drove for a layup to put SU in front 59-57 with 45 seconds to play. St. Mary's Lavonte Sanders answered with a layup to tie it at 59 all. Turner had a shot to win it for SU, but short armed the jumper sending the game to overtime.
Spalding opened the overtime period taking a three-point lead on a Turner jumper from long range to pull ahead, 62-59. The Seahawks responded with five straight points capped off by a pair of Bynum free throws to take a three-point margin and would hang on to win, 73-67.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court Wednesday, November 21 when they head to Centre College. Tipoff is 7 p.m. EST at Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
