DANVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's basketball team picked up a road win at Centre College, 87-77, Wednesday night in Danville, Ky. With the win, Spalding moves to 1-2 on the season, while Centre falls to 1-2.
Sophomore
Dominique Ellis led all scorers with 27 points going 9-of-12 from the field and pulled down 11 rebounds earning his first collegiate double-double.
Nick Trisko also recorded a double-double tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds, while
Rylan Rowe added 18 points.
The Golden Eagles jumped on Centre early. The Colonels followed a Rowe layup with a three-pointer by Sine Tucker to take a 3-2 lead, but it would only hold for 27 seconds. A Trisko made free throw jumpstarted a 12-0 Spalding run capped off by a
James Turner three-pointer to put SU ahead, 14-3, at the 12:44 mark. Centre's Jacob Bates connected from long range to cut Spalding's margin to nine points with just under six minutes remaining, but the Golden Eagles outscored the Colonel's 16-7 to close the half to take a 37-19 lead into the break.
SU kept their foot on the gas early in the second half extending their lead to 24 points on a
Will Rainey three-pointer with 13:08 to play. The Golden Eagles kept their lead between 15-20 points holding a 20-point lead with 3:56 remaining, but had to hold off a late push by the Colonels. Centre started to find their range knocking down a trio of three-pointers eventually cutting the SU lead to seven points with 1:28 to play, but the Golden Eagles made 5-of-8 free throws and held up on defense to win, 87-77.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday heading to Clarksville, Tenn. to take on Austin Peay, a NCAA Division I opponent. Tipoff is slated for 7 pm EST.
