ELSAH, Ill. – The Spalding University women's soccer team earned their second consecutive overtime victory edging Principia College, 3-2, with a golden goal in the 93
rd minute. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play, while the Panthers fall to 2-8 and 1-2 in SLIAC play.
With 2015 All-Conference Team members
Madison Ratchford and
Demi West sidelined, the Golden Eagles got some much needed support from the bench getting a goal apiece from
Julie McGee and
Sarah Cornett, while
Dee Dee Sliter slotted her 10
th goal of the season.
Kelsey Kaiser (6-3-0) made five saves on the night notching her sixth win of the season.
Spalding fell behind early giving up a goal to in the 11
th minute on a Rachel Perea header for the first goal of the game. The Golden Eagles attacked aggressively between the 20
th and 26
th minute taking four shots, with three on frame, eventually finding the back of the net when McGee fired a shot from the right corner about 18 yards out that looped over the hands of Prin keeper Libby Lewis to tie the game, 1-1. The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 43
rd minute when
Sarah Cornett fired a shot past the keeper for her first goal of the season. The lead wouldn't last for long as the Panthers answered 27 seconds later slotting the equalizer to send the teams to the halftime break tied, 2-2.
The Golden Eagles controlled possession in the second half taking 10 shots to Principia's 4 shots, while holding a 5 to 1 corner kick advantage. However, neither team was able find the back of the net and the Golden Eagles went to overtime for the second time in as many games.
It didn't take long for SU to close out the game in the extra period.
Baylee Tabler fed a ball to Sliter who slipped a shot just past the keeper and over the line for the game-winner.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the pitch Saturday, October 8 at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill.
