Spalding cruises to a 94-62 win against Fontbonne

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding used an offensive explosion to end a two game skid as they defeated Fontbonne, 94-62, Saturday afternoon at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The win brings the Golden Eagles record to 13-6 overall and 7-5 in SLIAC play. The loss drops the Griffins to 7-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
 
The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by Mackenzie Myers with 21 points. Brandy Hunter added 20 points. Maya Hardin completed her double-double bid with 14 points and 11 rebounds. 
 
Spalding started the first quarter with a 7-0 run including a three-point field goal by Myers.  Fontbonne would take their first lead of the game off of an Emily Haring three-pointer to bring the score to 13-11 in favor of the Griffins. Spalding would close out the first quarter on a 10-2 run to give them a 21-15 lead.
 
The second quarter would start with a 7-3 run capped off by Maddie Martin to push the Spalding margin to 10, at 28-18. A 9-1 run by Fontbonne would pull them back to within two points. Hunter would hit two key three-point field goals to facilitate a 12-4 run to push the lead to 41-31 late in the quarter. The Golden Eagles would take a 43-33 lead into the locker room.
 
The Golden Eagles opened the third on a 13-2 run capped off by a Myers three. A 7-2 run midway through the quarter would see Spalding's lead grow to 63-39. A 10-4 run over the final three minutes in the third was ignited by a Kim Mingus three-point field goal. With one quarter remaining, the Golden Eagles would lead 75-43.
 
The final frame would see the teams battle back and forth as they traded baskets. Spalding would start a 7-0 run, but Fontbonne stopped it with a Jelissa Puckett three-pointer.  The Griffins would continue to hold even in the quarter after Taylor Ventimiglia's three-pointer. The score was 90-57 with three minutes remaining. Fontbonne played strong in the end, but the lead Spalding built would prove to be too great.
 
Spalding will be back in action Wednesday, February 3 when they travel to Greenville, Ill. to take on the Greenville College Panthers. Tip-off will be at 7 pm EST.
