Greenville, Ill. – The Spalding University women's basketball team outscored Greenville 17-5 in overtime to claim victory Wednesday night in H.J. Long Gymnasium, 79-67. The win brings Spalding's overall record to 14-6 with an 8-5 mark in conference play. The loss drops Greenville to 13-7 overall and 9-4 in the SLIAC.
Junior
Maya Hardin erupted for a game high 31 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles in both categories. This outburst included a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Brandy Hunter totaled 13 points, while
Mackenzie Myers added 10.
Julie Skaggs' jumper got the game started with just under a minute and a half played. Greenville answered with a 5-0 run after a three-pointer by Maria Reinhard. An 11-5 run by Greenville would finish out their strong start and after one quarter of play Spalding trailed, 19-9.
The second quarter would stay fairly even as Spalding found themselves down 24-13 with a little over eight minutes remaining.
Kim Mingus would hit a three-pointer and Spalding would go on a 12-3 run to pull within just two points and two minutes remaining in the half. A pair of
Alex Martin free throws at the end of the half brought the score to 31-29 in favor of Greenville.
Spalding would start an 11-4 run out of the locker room to obtain their largest lead of the game to that point at 40-35. Greenville answered right back with an 8-0 run to regain the lead at 43-40. The Panthers would outscore Spalding 5-0 over the last two and a half minutes of the quarter and head into the fourth with a 48-42 lead.
Greenville opened the quarter quickly with a three-pointer from Claire Schmitt. The Golden Eagles found their answer in Hardin and Myers as the duo combined for nine points on a 10-2 Spalding run that brought them within two once again. Hardin's three at the three minute mark gave Spalding a 62-60 lead and they would look to hold on for the victory. With just 38 seconds to play though, Greenville's Taylor Paulin would a hit jumper to tie the game at 62 and force overtime.
Bonus basketball would start out close as the first two minutes of action saw Spalding cling to a 69-67 lead. Spalding would close out overtime on a 10-0 run as the Golden Eagles converted on five free throws down the stretch.
Spalding will be back in action this Saturday, February 6
th to take on Iowa Wesleyan in Derek Smith Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm EST.
