Golden Eagles take out Fontbonne, 78-60

LOUISVILLE, Ky, - The Spalding men's basketball team halted their three-game conference losing streak by defeating Fontbonne, 78-60, Saturday evening at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The win brings the Golden Eagles overall record to 8-11 and 6-6 in conference play. The loss sees the Griffins fall to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in the SLIAC.
 
Senior Brandon Goeing led all in scoring with 22 points. Freshman Rylan Rowe added 19. Nick Trisko had a dominant performance in the paint tallying a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds.
 
The first half began with a 5-0 run by Spalding after Goeing's three-pointer. Fontbonne was quick to answer and took the lead at 6-5 with four minutes played. A 7-2 run by Spalding would see them take the lead back at 16-14; however, Fontbonne once again answered to tie the game at 16 all. A 12-0 run by Spalding sparked by two huge three-point field goals from Rowe would give them their largest lead of the game to that point, at 28-16 with five minutes remaining in the half. Spalding would close the half on a 12-3 run giving them a 40-23 lead heading into the locker room.
 
A 6-2 jolt from Fontbonne out of the break would inch the Griffins closer with the score line reading 42-29 with three minutes gone in the second half. The Golden Eagles would answer back with an 11-4 run of their own after a fast break layup by Rowe. Dominque Ellis would score all seven points in a 7-3 Spalding run to push the lead to 65-44 with seven and half minutes remaining in the game. A 7-0 run by Fontbonne would cut the lead down to 14. A 6-0 Griffin run later in the half would be stopped after Trisko hit a layup to keep the Golden Eagles in front by 14. Spalding would close the game out on a 7-3 run after a jumper by Rowe to close out the win.
 
Spalding will be back in action in Wednesday, February 3 when they travel to Greenville, Ill. to take on Greenville College. The game tips off at 9 pm EST.
