EUREKA, Ill. – Spalding would never lead as they fall for the second straight game to Eureka, 65-60. The loss drops Spalding to 12-6 overall and 6-5 in conference play. The Red Devils win brings their record 6-12 overall and 5-6 in the SLIAC.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Myers led the way for Spalding with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Alex Martin followed close behind with 15 points and also tallied eight rebounds.
The first quarter belonged to the Red Devils as they would open the game on a 16-2 run. They would outscore Spalding 18-6 through the first quarter of play. Myers would be responsible for four of the Golden Eagles' six points. The story of the first quarter for Spalding was their six turnovers, which played a crucial role in the first quarter deficit.
Spalding opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run, including four straight points from
Maya Hardin and the lead was cut down to six with just under two minutes gone. With the scoreboard reading 22-16 in favor of Eureka, the Red Devils would extend their lead with an 8-0 run. Spalding would answer right back to close the half on a 7-2 run lead by
Maddie Martin, who was responsible for six of the seven points. This left the Golden Eagles down 32-23 at the half.
Myers would start off the third quarter on fire scoring seven straight points as the Golden Eagles went on a 7-3 run to bring the score to 35-30. Eureka would fire back with a 10-2 run to stretch their lead to 13 with four and a half minutes remaining in the third. After trading baskets and few trips to the free throw line, the quarter would end with Spalding trailing 51-37.
The final frame would start off with the teams trading baskets. With the Golden Eagles trailing 58-43 and six and half minutes remaining, the game would turn on its head. Spalding would charge back with a 15-3 run capped off by A. Martin's three-point field goal and with less than a minute to go, it would be a one possession game. However, Eureka would hit their free throws, and the comeback bid would fall short.
Spalding returns home Saturday, January 30 where they will look to end their two game skid as they take on Fontbonne. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.
