LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Brandon Goeing's 10 points in the final 1:11 of regulation lead Spalding to a 74-60 victory over MacMurray on Wednesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium. Goeing finished with 27 points, his fifth straight 20-point game.
The Golden Eagles improved to 6-8; 4-3 in conference play while MacMurray fell to 6-8; 3-4 in SLIAC competition.
The first half was action packed with seven ties and 12 lead changes in the first 20 minutes. The Highlanders took their largest lead of the half after Deavis Johnson completed the three-point play to give MacMurray a 33-27 lead with just over four minutes to play in the half. Both teams shot over fifty percent in the opening frame with Brent Long leading all scorers with 19 points on 9 of 11 shooting. Geoing scored 13 of his 27 in the first half.
The Golden Eagles came out strong to begin the second half and took a lead as large as 12 in the first ten minutes of the half after an
Owen Mumphrey three-pointer with just under 12-minutes to play in the game. MacMurray would answer the bell and bring the game to within two with 1:35 to play after a pair of made free throws from Deavis Johnson.
On Spalding's next possession, Goeing heaved a three at the shot clock horn and banked it in putting the Golden Eagles up five. The Highlanders next possession resulted in a turnover and a pair of technical fouls on MacMurray coach Todd Creal. Goeing knocked down all four free throws and Spalding was in the drivers seat to finish the final minute of play.
Spalding would take their biggest lead of 14 after two more Goeing free throws with 30 seconds left. The Golden Eagles hit 23 of 24 free throws and shot 54 percent from the field. Spalding outrebounded MacMurray by five and scored 23 points off of 13 Highlander turnovers.
The Golden Eagles will remain at home this weekend as they take on Webster University at 3:00 p.m. ET, Saturday, at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
