EUREKA, Ill. – The Spalding University volleyball team took both matches at Eureka College Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles swept MacMurray in straight sets in the morning match, and toppled Fontbonne 4-1 in afternoon match.
With a pair of wins, the Golden Eagles improve to 7-2 in SLIAC play and 7-10 overall. Currently, Spalding sits in fourth place in the conference standings two games behind conference leading Greenville College.
The Golden Eagles hit their way to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) sweep over MacMurray.
Erin Downs was on fire, hitting a season-high .769 for the match, tallying 10 kills on 13 attacks. Downs was accompanied by
Victoria Heitzman who recorded a match-high 14 kills on 29 total attacks. Freshman
Kaitlin Hall paced the squad with 33 assists, while
Kaylee McCartney anchored the defense with 10 digs.
In the second match, the Golden Eagles and Griffins split the first two sets, but Spalding closed out the match winning sets three and four, 25-17 and 25-15. Three Golden Eagles finished the match with double-digit kills. Heitzman tallied a team-high 14 kills for the second time on the day, while
Ashley Chase added 13 kills and
Jessica Diehl converted 12 kills on 25 total attacks. Again, Hall led the team with 37 assists, while
Jill Dunagan and McCartney finished with 18 digs apiece.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Wednesday when they take on College of Mount St. Joseph at 7:30 p.m., EST in Cincinnati, Ohio.
