LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball split a doubleheader against Transylvania Monday evening, winning 9-5 in the afternoon game before falling 8-1 in the nightcap. Spalding ends the day with a 20-11 record. The loss was only their second in the last 13 contests.
Javier Guerra pitched a complete game in game one, allowing the five runs on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts. The Eagles' offense scored seven runs between the third and fourth innings, highlighted by home runs from
Ryan Mosby and
Kam Bruner.
Austin Drake also had a nice day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. The Pioneers were able to string together five hits in the top of the fifth to cut the lead down to three at 8-5, but Guerra held them hitless for the rest of the game.
In the second game, Transylvania pitcher Trey Simpson baffled the Golden Eagle hitters, using a deceptive breaking ball that kept Spalding without a hit until
Jacob Woodruff hit a triple in the bottom of the sixth. Mosby drove him in with a single, but the eagles were still down 8-1 at that point. Spalding finished with just two hits.
The Eagles return to conference play on Friday as they take on visiting Principia. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. EST.
