LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team swept a three game series against visiting MacMurray over the weekend, winning 6-5 on Friday and sweeping a double-header on Saturday with 7-1 and 11-8 wins. The Golden Eagles are now 19-10 this season and lead the SLIAC East Division standings with a 12-4 conference record.
In the first game,
Josh Exton pitched six and two-thirds solid innings and the Eagles scored on back-to-back throwing errors by MacMurray's catcher on steal attempts during a three-run seventh. The Eagles led 5-1 after eight innings but held on in the ninth. The Highlanders scored twice in the inning to cut the lead to one, at 6-5 before
Korie Vire was called upon to close it out. Vire struck out Floyd Lomelino on three pitches with the tying run on third to pick up the save.
In game two of the series,
Ryan Mosby (5-0) was once again lights out on the mound, going the distance and allowing one run with four strikeouts. The Eagles' offense broke open a close game during a four-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run double from
Austin Drake.
Kam Bruner subsequently knocked him in for a 7-1 lead. Drake had a double and a triple in the game.
Kyle Olliges pitched and got the win in game three, but the Eagles once again had to withstand a late rally by the Highlanders. The Eagles led 9-1 after four innings despite having only three hits.
Kam Bruner hit a three-run double in the third in what was part of a four RBI day and Drake hit a towering three-run homer in the fourth to put the Eagles up by eight runs. When MacMurray cut the lead down to three in the top of the ninth, Spalding once again called upon Vire to close it out as he picked up his second save in as many days.
The Eagles are off until Wednesday, April 22 when they host a doubleheader against Transylvania. The first game will start at 5:00 p.m. EST.
