LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team took a doubleheader from Principia 6-1 and 13-1 improving to 11-15 and 8-4 in conference.
In game one,
Kelci Flener earned her seventh win of the season, holding the Panthers to one run, scattering four hits while striking out seven batters and walking one.
Shelby Kilgore and
Amanda Gilliland led the Spalding hitters each getting a pair of hits.
SU opened the game with a three-run bottom of the first.
Alyssa McAfee singled to center field driving in
Kaylin Rucker for the first run of the game, and an error in right field allowed McAfee and
Becca Mouser to score.
Principia scored on a Yulia Marquardt single in the third inning to cut the Eagles lead to two runs, but Spalding answered with a run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to make the final score 6-1.
In the second game,
Alyssa McAfee went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored to help SU roll to a 13-1 win.
Robyn Schoen (3-5) got the win, allowing one run on five hits while striking out and walking one.
Principia got on the board first when Samantha Bronkar singled to left field scoring Thanda Kyaw.
However, Spalding answered with a trio of runs in the home half of the inning.
Becca Mouser reach on a fielder's choice, but an error at second allowed McAfee and Kilgore to score. Mouser crossed the plate for SU's third run of the inning, and it was all SU the rest of the way as they went on to score 10 more runs ending the game in five innings.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action later today with a doubleheader against Westminster at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. EST.
