NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Spalding University softball team was swept by IU Southeast in a doubleheader, dropping 6-0 and 5-3 decisions. The losses drop Spalding to 5-9 this season.
In the first game, the Eagle bats were silenced by IUS pitcher Jessica Leanhart, as only two runners reached base.
Becca Mouser had the team's only hit, a double in the fifth inning. Robin Schoen took the loss, allowing three earned runs in six innings.
The Golden Eagles were able to score three runs on four hits in the second game. After allowing two runs in the first, Spalding manufactured a run in the second by loading the bases and scoring on a fielder's choice. IUS scored the next three runs before Spalding made it interesting in the sixth in a rally speared by
Becca Mouser. Mouser doubled home a run and scored on a single by
Kaylin Rucker. With
Kaytlyn Mitchell at the plate representing the go-ahead run, IUS went back to Leanhart, who pitched one and a third spotless innings to close it out.
Spalding takes the field again on Friday, March 27th with a doubleheader at Blackburn. The games are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. EST.
