Softball improves to 4-0 in SLIAC play with DH sweep of Webster

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team swept a double header away from Webster, winning by scores of 6-4 and 14-6. The wins improve the Eagles record to 5-7 this season and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.

In the first game, Alyssa McAfee and Amanda Gilliland drove in two runs apiece while Becca Mouser and Kaylin Rucker each drove in a run as well for the Eagles. It was an overall balanced attack, as eight different players had at least one hit and six different players scored a run. Kelci Flener (3-2) pitched and got the win, going seven innings and recording seven strikeouts.

In the third inning, Spalding used three consecutive singles to load the bases for McAfee, who followed with a two run double to straight away centerfield. Gilliland hit a sacrifice fly to score Shelby Kilgore to make it 3-0 after three innings.

Webster got two runs back in the fourth, but Mouser keyed a three run rally in the fifth when she hit an RBI triple and later scored on another sacrifice fly from Gilliland. Kaylin Rucker would later add an RBI double for a 6-2 lead and the Eagles would hold on from there.

The second game was an offensive explosion for the Eagles, as they set a new season high in runs scored. Every starter had at least one run scored and one RBI. Becca Mouser continued her hot streak at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Mouser's batting average improved to .389, including a blistering .583 in conference play.

Though Spalding scored four runs in the top of the first on back-to-back 2-RBI base hits from McAfee and Brooke Lamon, the third inning set the tone for them, as they crossed the plate eight times in the frame. A triple by Gilliland, her second hit of the inning, put the Eagles ahead 12-2 as they entered the fourth. Webster rallied for four runs in the inning, but Spalding was able to walk-off when Becca Mouser hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to employ the eight after five rule.

Spalding plays again Friday when they travel to Blackburn for a doubleheader at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. EST.
