MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Spalding University softball opened the season defeating Mt. St. Vincent 2-0 in a pitcher's duel Sunday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
Kelci Flener (1-0), the reigning SLIAC pitcher of the year, tossed a shutout, going seven innings, allowing just five hits and striking out nine batters.
Brook Lamon led Spalding at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Becca Mouser had SU's other RBI, and Flener scored both runs.
With two outs and no one on base, Flener took first on a base on balls, advanced to second on an
Amanda Gilliland single to left field and moved to third on a Lamon single to shortstop. Flener came home on Mouser single to third base to give SU a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles added another run in the third inning extending their lead to 2-0. Flener led off the inning with a double to left field and scored on a Lamon single to right field for the final run of the game.
The Eagles hit the field again with a double-header on Monday, March 16
th against New Paltz State at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. EST.
