Softball drops doubleheader to New Paltz, 6-3 and 6-2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Spalding University softball team was swept in a doubleheader on Monday against New Paltz State, losing the first game 6-3 and the night cap 6-2. The losses put Spalding's record at 1-2 on the season.

In the first game, right fielder Shelby Kilgore had a nice day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Becca Mouser added a triple and an RBI for the Eagles. Spalding got a solid pitching performance from Courtney Miller, who went three a two-thirds innings and allowed no earned runs.

After the Eagles fell behind 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Mouser got things going in the bottom half, ripping an RBI triple and later scoring on an error. Spalding added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Kelci Flener to give Spalding a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth. The Hawks erupted for four runs in the top of the inning and shut Spalding down for their final two at-bats.

In the second game, Robin Schoen pitched a complete game and allowed four earned runs and Brooke Lamon added two hits and a run scored. After the Eagles fell behind 5-0 after four innings, they tried to stage a rally in the fifth when Lamon and Kaytlyn Mitchell started the inning with back to back singles. They would come around to score on base hits by Kaylin Rucker and Brooke Conder but could do no more.
