LOS ANGELES, Ca. - The Golden Eagle nine lead for the first 4.5 innings, but fell to host Occidental, 8-7, Friday in Los Angeles, California.
SU had three players finish with multiple hits.
Blake Patterson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while
Nic Chafin and
Brad Speek went 2-for-5 and scored a run.
Korie Vire finished with a team-high three RBIs while going 1-for-5 on the day.
Chance Brinley (0-1) took the loss, giving up 4 runs on 2 hits and walked three batters in 1.1 innings.
Ryan Mosby got the start on the mound, going 4.0 innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles jumped on Occidental early starting the game with a five run top of the first. A
Brad Speek bunt loaded the bases moving
Kam Bruner to second and
Ryan Mosby to third.
Korie Vire doubled to left field bringing in Mosby and Bruner to give SU a 2-0 lead. A
JR Belt walk loaded the bases and
Drew Beckmann hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Speek and advancing the runners.
Blake Patterson followed with a two-RBI double bringing in Belt and Vire to make it 5-0.
SU added one run in the second to make the score 6-0. Mosby reached on a leadoff single to right field and advanced to second on the throw. Mosby moved to third on a
Nic Chafin single and crossed the plate on a Bruner RBI single to right field.
Spalding held Occidental scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Tigers erupted for six runs in the home half of the inning. Occidental tied the game on a Devon DeRaad double to right center that scored Brad Fuller and Charlie Caccamo to knot the score at 6.
One inning later, the Tigers Brad Fuller ripped a single to center field bringing in Jona Brooks and A.J. Libunao for the game winning runs.
The Golden Eagles picked up a run in the ninth, but were unable to complete the comeback. Chafin got on with a leadoff double and advanced to third to on an error by the second baseman giving SU runners on first and third with no outs. Following a Speek strikeout, Vire grounded out to third allowing Chafin race home to cut the deficit to one. However, a
JR Belt groundout to the shortstop ended the game.
SU will be back in action tomorrow with they take on Ithaca College in a neutral site game at University of Redlands.
