Eagles survive scare, top Principia, 59-56

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's basketball team survived a scare against Principia 59-56. The win puts Spalding at 15-8 this season, including 12-4 in the conference. Principia slips to 5-15 overall, 3-12 in SLIAC play.

Brandon Goeing led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points while Brandon Gabriel and James Turner pitched in with 12 points apiece. Renaldo Moore also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points and pulling down eight rebounds for the Eagles, who had a 21-4 advantage in bench points.

The first half was close throughout as neither team was able to create separation. Spalding never trailed but just could not pull away from the Panthers. The lead stayed around five points for the last 15 minutes of the first half before a late SU flurry pushed the lead up to nine at halftime, 38-29.

Principia opened the second half with a three-pointer, but back-to-back triples by Goeing and Turner put the Golden Eagles up 12, 44-32 with 18 minutes remaining. The Panthers used a 9-0 run to get back into the game, cutting the lead to three with just over 11 minutes left. Spalding had chances to put the game away, but scored only 11 points in the final 14 minutes. The Panthers had a chance to tie the game, but threw ball out of bounds with four seconds left.

Next up, the Golden Eagles play a road game Monday, February 16th at Webster at 8:00 p.m. EST.
