ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding University men's basketball fell to the Webster Gorloks, 56-47. The loss drops them to 15-9 this season, 12-5 against SLIAC competition putting SU one game behind first place MacMurray.
The Eagles were lead in scoring by
Brandon Goeing's 13 points on 3-for-8 shooting from downtown.
James Turner added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Eagles, who shot just 39 percent from the floor as a team.
The game opened with the two teams playing to a 4-4 tie, but the Gorloks went on a 9-2 run to put them up 13-6 midway through the first half. An Eagles 9-2 run, capped by a three pointer from Goeing, cut the lead to one point at 21-20 with 3:35 left in the half, but Webster outscored Spalding 5-2 to go head into the break with a 26-22 lead.
The teams traded buckets for the first part of the second half. A pair of Goeing free throws brought Spalding within two points at 30-28 with less than 14 minutes left in the game. The Gorloks countered with a 17-3 spurt that left the Eagles down by 16 points with seven minutes remaining, and SU never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Eagles wrap up the regular season at home Saturday against Westminster at 3:00 p.m. EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
