ST. MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Spalding University women's basketball team passed out a school-record 31 assists as they soared past the St. Mary of the Woods Pomeroys, 106-74, Wednesday night at the Knoerle Center improving to 17-4 on the year.
Jessica Guy shot 11-for-15 on her way to 27 point while adding four steals and five rebounds.
Kayla Styles scored 21 of her own, on 9-of-13 shooting, pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out six assists.
Maya Hardin had 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench and
Hannah Washle pitched in 11 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting night. The Golden Eagles shot 60 percent as a team for the game and held a 53-39 rebounding advantage.
The Pomeroys came out hot, using a 7-2 run to take an early 7-4 lead within the first 90 seconds of the game. An 8-0 spurt gave Spalding the lead for good, and the Golden Eagles were dominant for the rest of the half, scoring at will and controlling the boards. A 17-6 run late in the period put Spalding ahead 37-21 with four minutes left in the half. The lead was stretched to 19 late in the first half before Spalding settled for a 50-33 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead in the second half, reeling off a 21-10 run to go ahead by 28 with 14 minutes left for a 71-43 lead. SU was able to cruise the rest of the way, pushing their lead to a game-high 35 points following a
Caitlin Montgomery to make it 98-63.
The Lady Eagles return to conference play on Saturday, February 14 hosting Principia at 1:00 p.m. EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
