LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding men's basketball team erased a 12-point halftime deficit behind Domonique Ellis' 26 second half points to defeat Eureka College 74-66 and improve 2-4, 1-1 in the SLIAC on the season. Eureka fell to 2-6, 1-1 in conference play with the loss.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 12:20 left in the first half as they knocked down two three's in the process. Eureka took their biggest lead of the first half at 15 points with 3:24 left. Spalding could only cut it to 12 at the halftime break, trailing at the half for the fifth time in six games.
Spalding came out hitting shots in the second half where they shot 50 percent in the final 20 minutes. The deficit was cut to six after a
Rylan Rowe three with 15:44 to play. Three minutes later the Red Devils had their lead to a game-high 16 after a trifecta by Sam Feehan.
At that point, the Golden Eagles needed a spark and got one from an unlikely source. Domo Ellis, who hadn't hit a three this season, hit three in the span of three minutes and also added two free throws to score 11 straight Golden Eagle points to get the game within two. "I was hot and I knew it. I just had to let it fly", said Ellis after the comeback victory.
Spalding took its first lead of the game with 4:07 remaining on a trio of free throws from
Brandon Goeing, who scored six points. Eureka battled back but couldn't tie or retake the lead from that point forward as the Golden Eagles were able to hit clutch free throws down the stretch. Spalding took it's largest lead of the game at eight points with 14 seconds left after a couple of made free throws from
Victor Cosby and went on to win by that margin, 74-66.
The Golden Eagles hit 17-of-22 free throws and 11-of-25 from behind the arc to secure the win. Missed free throws down the stretch by the Red Devils allowed the Golden Eagles to get back into the game. Eureka finished just 12-of-25 from the charity stripe.
Freshman, Rowe, was the other Spalding player in double-figures with ten. The Golden Eagles had 49 bench points to Eureka's six. The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, December 12 at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Mo.
