St. LOUIS – Spalding held a two-point lead at the half but 48 second half points by Fontbonne helped them to a 79-70 win against the Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Fontbonne University.
Brandon Goeing, who needed 23 points to reach 1,000 in his career failed to score in the first half as Fontbonne shot 41 percent and attempted 22 free throws to Spalding's two. Spalding was able to take a 33-31 lead into the halftime break behind five three-pointers. James Turner and Rylan Rowe were both in double-figures with 11 and 10 respectively.
The second half was very fast paced and Goeing scored 17 including three three-pointers in 4:36 to extend the Spalding lead to nine with 16:24 to play. Fontbonne turned a nine-point deficit to a nine-point lead with 2:16 to go. They would go on to win by that number, 79-70.
Spalding hit 10 three pointers but turned it over 19 times leading to 23 Fontbonne points. The Golden Eagles will look to bounce back against Centre College in non-conference action on Tuesday, December 15 at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court Tuesday, December 12 when they host Centre College at 8:00 p.m. EST.
