Golden Eagles fall at Transy, 70-64

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Spalding University women's basketball team fell at Transylvania, 70-64, Wednesday night at the Clive M. Beck Center. With the loss, Spalding drops to 8-2 overall.

Freshman Alex Martin led the Golden Eagles with 21 points and five rebounds. Maya Hardin added 16 points and six rebounds, and Julie Skaggs tallied 10 points and two blocks. Kristen Hayes led the Pioneers with 16 points.

The Golden Eagles and Pioneers played to a 28-28 after two quarters. Transy jumped out to an 11-7 lead to start the game, but Spalding scored seven unanswered points taking a 14-11 lead on a Maya Hardin jumper. A Julie Skaggs jumper made it 16-13 with 19 seconds remaining, but a pair of Carlee Clemons free throws made it 16-15 after one quarter. Both teams went shot for shot in the second quarter, Martin pushed the Eagles ahead, 28-26, with 2:33 to play. However, a Taylor Jackson layup made the score 28-28 at the break.

Spalding came out cold in the second half, missing their first seven shots and couldn't find their mark as Transy gradually stretched their lead to 10 points, at 48-38, heading into the fourth quarter. Transylvania outscored the Golden Eagles 12-6 to start the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, Spalding raced back into the game behind an 11-0 spurt capped off by a pair of Alex Martin free throws, but couldn't complete the comeback falling, 70-64.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, January 3 hosting Greenville College; tipoff is 1:00 p.m. EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
