Golden Eagles complete sweep in St. Pete topping Scotties, 69-56

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Spalding University women's basketball team improved to 8-1 on the season topping Agnes Scott, 69-56, to sweep their two-game trip to St. Petersburg.

Three Golden Eagles scored in double-figures. Freshman guard Alex Martin paced SU with a game-high 14 points, while passing out four assists and collecting six steals. Julie Skaggs finished with 13 points, and Maddie Martin recorded her second double-double of the season recording 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Spalding led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. Skaggs knocked down a jumper to put SU on the scoreboard and they led 6-2 mid way through the first quarter. The Scotties Grace Keheley cut the Spalding lead to four, but Alex Martin converted a pair of free throws to push extend the SU lead to six points at the end of the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles began to impose their will in the second quarter increasing the margin to 11 points at the half. Spalding opened the quarter with an 11-2 burst capped off by an Alex Martin layup to make the score 25-10 at the six minute mark. SU would increase their lead to 20 points, their largest of the game, when Maddie Martin knocked down a jumper with 2:14 to play in the half. The Scotties would finish the half on a 9-0 run to make the score 34-23 at the break.

The Scotties carried over the momentum from the end of the half outscoring the Golden Eagles 7-4 to cut the SU lead to eight points. Mackenzie Myers connected on a jumper sparking a 7-2 run to push the margin back to 13 points. A Keheley jumper would cut the lead to 10 points, but Maddie Martin answered with a layup to push the lead back to 12 points heading into the final 10 minutes.

Maya Hardin knocked down a jumper to start the fourth quarter and the Golden Eagles slowly began to pull away stretching their lead to 17 points with two minutes to play as SU coasted to the 69-56 win.

The Golden Eagles will take a break over the holidays before returning to action against in-state foe Transylvania Wednesday, December 30. The Golden Eagles and Pioneers will face off in Lexington, Ky. at the Clive M. Beck Center at 7:00 p.m. EST.
