GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Greenville College, 1-0, on Thursday night at Francis Field. The Panthers improved to 6-7-0 overall and 3-0-0 in SLIAC play while the Golden Eagles fell to 5-7-0 and 2-1-0 in conference play.
The first half was scoreless but both teams had chances to find the back of the net. Spalding had 10 shots in the first half, holding the Panthers to just four.
The second half was much of the same; both teams with chances but no one could find the net until the 82
nd minute. The Panthers Josh Ripperger scored on an assist by Jonny Madrid giving Greenville a 1-0 lead late in the match.
Spalding battled and had a corner in the 84
th minute and a shot on goal by
Jacob McMurry in the 88
th but neither amounted to a goal and the Golden Eagles fell, 1-0, on the road to Greenville.
Spalding led in both shots (16-11) and shots on goal (7-5) in the match. The Golden Eagles will be back on the pitch on Saturday against Iowa Wesleyan in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
