Golden Eagles shock Gorlocks in 2-1 overtime victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Spalding women's soccer team came back from 1-0 deficit late in the second half to defeat the Webster Gorlocks, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday at Champions Trace.

The win improved the Golden Eagles to 8-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play. The loss was the Gorlocks first in SLIAC competition as they fell to 10-5-0 and 6-1-0.

In the 93rd minute Dee Dee Sliter took a ball over the top from Alnee Tutson and beat a defender to score the game-winning goal. This came after a Madison Ratchford goal in the 88th minute assisted by Sliter and Baylee Tabler sending the game to overtime.

"This is huge", said Sliter after the match. She had a couple of chances at a goal in the first half, but the Gorlock defense was able to kill the attack by clearing the ball. "It is a little frustrating not being able to score early, but I know we will finish strong, so I'm not too worried about it in the beginning."

"[This team] dug deep. They have been stepping it up the entire year and I think this is a testament to the work they have been putting in and never giving up," said coach Shilo Rayburn. "This is a big win and one I think we deserve."

Before the game-winner in the 93rd minute the Golden Eagles had a penalty kick 20 seconds into the overtime period after Webster committed a foul inside the 18-yard box. Baylee Tabler took the shot but it was saved by Gorlock goalie Alisa Coralic. The Golden Eagles were able to continue their attack on the Webster defense after the momentum shift leading to the game-winning goal.

The first half was played to a 0-0 tie as both teams played great defense. Demi West and Megan Ogden, who came off the bench midway through the first half kept the ball from getting deep into the Webster attacking zone. The Gorlocks took three shots in the first half while Spalding only had one.

The second half began a lot like the first with great defense on both sides, not allowing the ball to get deep into the attacking zone. It wasn't until the 69th minute that Caroline Ries brought the ball up the right side and put a pass onto the foot of Lauren Pratt who completed the play with a goal in the far left corner.

The Gorlocks would have a couple more chances at goals to try to extend their lead but again the Golden Eagle defense came up big clearing the ball once it got deep into the box. Webster outshot Spalding eight to seven, but Spalding led in corner kicks eight to six.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, October 24, at 4:00 p.m. at Champions Trace versus Blackburn College.
