LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding women's soccer team clinched a spot in the SLIAC conference tournament for the first time Saturday afternoon with a, 5-0, Senior Day win against Blackburn. The shutout was their seventh, extending a school record since joining the SLIAC in 2009.
The win improved the Golden Eagles record to 9-4-2 and 6-1-1 in conference play. Blackburn fell to 5-11-0, 1-6-0 in SLIAC competition.
The Golden Eagles got on the board quickly as
Demi West delivered a ball to
Dee Dee Sliter who finished her first of two goals on the afternoon. Eight minutes later
Baylee Tabler scored her first goal in four games, unassisted, giving Spalding an early 2-0 lead.
In the 28th minute Sliter added her second goal of the afternoon, this time assisted by senior
Hannah Freytag. The goal was Sliter's 16th of the season, tying her for the conference lead and she added her 34th point of the season two back in the circuit. The Golden Eagles headed to halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
The second half was a lot like the first, as Spalding was able to control most of the action. In the 72nd minute defender Megan Ogden scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by
Sarah Cornett, who picked up her first collegiate assist. Two minutes later Spalding capitalized again as
Hannah Sullivan scored a goal, assisted by
Shelby Lurie, to make the score 5-0, which would stand.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Beavers 20-4 and had a 2-0 advantage in corners. Spalding will be back on the pitch for their final game of the season Saturday, October 31, at Westminster College. The time of the game is TBA.
