Guy propels SU past Fontbonne, 65-45

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Spalding University women's basketball team defeated Fontbonne University at Derek Smith Gymnasium Tuesday night, 65-45. The lady Eagles improved to 7-3 on the season and 5-0 in the SLIAC, while Fontbonne fell to 6-6 and 2-3.

Jessica Guy was dominant from start to finish scoring 19 points while pulling down 23 rebounds, helping SU earn a 59-42 advantage on the glass. Kayla Styles also stuffed the stat sheet as well, pouring in 14 points, five boards, five blocks and three assists for the Eagles. Maya Hardin provided a spark off the bench finishing with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

After trading buckets for the opening segment, Spalding essentially put the game away at the 14:51 mark, when a Styles three-pointer ignited 21-4 SU burst. Guy, Styles and Hardin combined for 17 of the 21 points during the run giving the Lady Eagles a 32-14 lead, and pushed their lead to 23 points at the half.

Fontbonne was left playing catch-up the entire second half, the Griffins came out firing quickly slicing the SU lead to 15 points with 9:49 to play. That would be as close as the Griffins would get as Hardin heated up again and helped stretch the lead back up to 20 as the Eagles coasted to a 65-45 win.

Up next for Spalding, they continue conference play, hosting Blackburn College on Thursday, January 8th. Tipoff is set for 6 pm at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
