ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding University women's team bounced back from their first conference loss with a 63-48 road win at Fontbonne Saturday afternoon. The win pushed their overall record to 15-4 and 13-1 in the SLIAC. Fontbonne fell to 7-11 for the season, 3-8 in conference.
Jessica Guy dominated the interior, finishing with 19 points, 17 rebounds and four steals.
Kayla Styles added another double-double, with 19 points, 11 boards and three steals. The Golden Eagle defense held the Griffins to 35 percent shooting, including 0-10 from three-point range.
The first half was very close for the most part, with neither team able to go ahead by more than three points for the first 11 minutes of the game. There were four lead changes to this point, but Spalding was able to create some separation with a 13-4 run that turned a one point deficit into an eight point lead. Guy and Styles combined for 17 Spalding points en route to a 29-22 lead at the break.
In second half, Spalding quickly pushed the lead up to nine, at 31-22, but Fontbonne was able to creep back into the game. A layup cut the SU lead to six points before Spalding pushed back ahead by ten. An 8-1 run by the Griffins cut it to three, at 41-38, with 11 minutes remaining. The Lady Eagles tightened their defense, allowing only two field goals for the rest of the game. The lead grew to as high as 18 for Spalding, who out rebounded Fontbonne 29-12 in the second half.
Spalding has a week off before returning home to play MacMurray Saturday, February 7 at 1:00 p.m. EST.
