Kayla Styles and
Jessica Guy combined for 38 points to lead the Spalding University women's basketball team to a 60-42 win at Principia College Saturday afternoon. The win improves SU's record to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Styles led all scorers with 20 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds and blocking five shots. Guy added 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Kara Johnson led Principia with 14 points, and Rachael Perea added 13 points.
Guy and Styles combined for Spalding's first six points as the Lady Eagles raced out to a 14-4 lead just 3:47 into the game. A Kara Johnson jump shot cut the SU lead to five at 14-9, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 17-3 run pushing their lead to 19 points with 1:40 left in the half. Following an exchange of made jumpers, Principia's Karina Olsen connected on a jumper to reduce Splading's lead to 17 just before the end of the half.
The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points out of the break to balloon their lead to 24 points, and a Guy jumper gave SU their largest lead of the game at 44-18. Spalding still led by 25 with 6:48 to play, but the Panthers outscored SU 11-4 to get within 18 before the end of the game.
Spalding shot 42.9% for the game and 33.3% from long range, while holding Principia to 30% shooting from the field and 14.3% from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles were stingy on defense, forcing 28 turnovers creating 14 on steals, and blocked seven shots.
Up next, the Lady Eagles will host Fontbonne University Tuesday, January 6. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
