Defense leads Lady Golden Eagles past Eureka, 81-49

EUREKA, Ill. – The Spalding University women's basketball team used another stout defensive effort to run past the Eureka Red Devils, 81-49, Tuesday night in Eureka, Illinois. It was the tenth consecutive win for the Golden Eagles, moving their record to 14-3 overall and 11-0 in conference. Eureka falls to 10-8 overall and 7-3 during conference play.

Kayla Styles led the way again with 19 points and five blocked shots while Jessica Guy notched another double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Maya Hardin was the only other player in double figures with 11 points for Spalding, who dished out 21 assists versus only ten turnovers.

Eureka showed some fight early, trailing only 8-6 five minutes into the game. However, the Eagles blitzed them with a 21-4 run that gave them a 29-10 lead after a Caitlin Montgomery layup off her own miss with nine minutes remaining in the half. Spalding eased to the break with a 39-22 lead.

The second half was more of the same, and the Red Devils never drew closer than 17 points the rest of the way. Spalding continued to pull away, and another layup by Montgomery gave Spalding a 35 point lead, their largest of the game, at 78-43. Spalding forced 15 turnovers in the period and held Eureka to 35 percent shooting.

The Lady Golden Eagles will have a day off before a showdown Thursday night at Iowa Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m. EST.
