Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Evan Skaggs

Defense leads Lady Eagles past Blackburn, 97-41

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University women's basketball team used stingy defense and an outburst on offense to run past Blackburn College, 97-51. The Eagles stayed unbeaten in conference play at 11-0 and 13-3 overall. The Beavers remained winless on the season, falling to 0-17 and 0-10 in SLIAC play.

Jessica Guy led the Eagles in scoring, pouring in 17 points while snaring seven rebounds. Kayla Styles stuffed the stat sheet again with 15 points, 11 boards, seven assists and four steals. Kallie Ash hit four three-point field goals on her way to 14 points for the Eagles, who dished out a season-high 28 assists and outrebounded the Beavers by 25.

After Blackburn scored the first basket of the game, it was all Eagles from there. A 19-4 run gave Spalding a 13 point lead just six minutes into the game. The Beavers were able to keep the margin between 10 and 13 points for a while, trailing 37-25 with six minutes left to play until break. At this point, Spalding hit them with a 19-2 run to close the half, taking a 29 point lead into halftime, 56-27.

The Spalding defense held Blackburn to just 14 second half points, allowing just four made field goals in the period while forcing 12 turnovers. Guy scored the first eight points of the second half and the lead never got below 30 again.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Tuesday night at Eureka College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. EST.
