Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles surge past Greenville with strong second half

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Spalding University women's basketball team edged Greenville College, 60-53, Wednesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium.  The Lady Eagle improved to 12-3 overall and continuing their streak of 10-0 in the SLIAC, while the Greenville Panthers drop to 7-8 overall and 4-5 in the SLIAC

Kayla Styles had a marvelous game for the Lady Golden Eagle (12-3, 10-0 SLIAC) leading the offensive charge finishing with a double double.  She had 20 points on seven of thirteen shooting from the field, and she grabbed 11 rebounds.  Brandy Hunter added 12 points off the bench. It was her fourth double-digit affair in her last five outings.

The Lady Eagles came out the gates a little sluggish, falling behind 9-2 after Laura Goodnight hit a three pointer at the 13:57 mark in the first half.  After a Spalding timeout, the Lady Eagles seemed to wake up and get back into the game.  They went on an extended 20-9 stretch, capped off by a three-pointer by Hunter with 1:07 to play in the half.  The lady Eagles trailed 23-22 at intermission.

In the second half, Styles and the Lady Eagles started to flex their muscle. Styles scored 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added five rebounds and three steals in the period. There were a total of six ties in the half, the final one coming with just over four minutes left to play. Spalding ended the game on a 10-3 run, with Dee Dee Sliter making several big plays down the stretch. A long three-pointer with the shot clock winding down gave Spalding a 55-50 lead with three minutes left to play. On the following Panther possession, she stole an inbounds pass and took it coast-to-coast for a seven-point lead. Hunter was able to ice the game at the free throw line, connecting on three out of four in the final minute.

Up next, the Lady Golden Eagles will travel to Blackburn College Saturday, January 24 at 3:00 p.m. EST.
