FULTON, Mo. - The Spalding University women's basketball team led wire to wire to beat Westminster College, 68-46, Saturday afternoon improving to 11-3 overall and 9-0 in conference play.
Kayla Styles paced the Golden Eagle offense with 20 points and 12 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action.
Kallie Ash and
Jessica Guy also finished in double figures scoring 11 points and 10 points respectively.
Saddie Theroff led Westminster (7-5, 6-2) with 11 points. Theroff was the only Blue Jay to finish with double digits.
The Lady Golden played excellent defense holding Westminster to 29.4% shooting from the field, their second lowest field goal percentage of the season. SU also held Westminster under 50 points for the only the second time this season.
Another key factor to the game was Spalding's ability to clean up the glass. The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Blue Jays 53-28 for a plus 25 rebound margin limiting Westminster to only eight second chance points.
Styles scored SU's first four points, but the Blue Jays kept up and SU only led 12-11 at the 11:32 mark. However, the Golden Eagles caught fire from long-range hitting five three-pointers fueling a 23-4 run to give the Golden Eagles a 35-15 lead with 5:17 left in the half. The Blue Jays cut their deficit to 15 points with just over a minute to play in the half, but a
Dee Dee Sliter jumper stretched it back to 17 sending SU into halftime with a 44-27 lead.
The Blue Jays gradually climbed back into the game cutting SU's lead to 10 points at 54-44 on back-to-back Kasey Gaston jumpers with 9:13 to go. Nevertheless, it was all Spalding from there. The Golden Eagles locked down on defense holding the Blue Jays to only two points over the final 9:13 outscoring Westminster 12-2 to end the game.
The Lady Golden Eagles will be back in action Wednesday evening when they host Greenville at 6:00 p.m. EST. Â Â
