ST. LOUIS – The Spalding University volleyball team split a doubleheader at Fontbonne University Saturday falling to the host Griffins, but bounced back to sweep Iowa Wesleyan to improve to 2-1 in SLIAC play.

SPALDING 1 - FONTBONNE 3
Spalding lost the first set 25-20. The Golden Eagles trailed from start to finish, falling behind by as many as eight points following a Katelyn Cosgrove service error, but SU battled back to cut the deficit to one point at 16-15 after a bad set by Fontbonne's Lynsey Wehrenberg. However, Fontbonne scored three consecutive points putting the game out of reach.

SU won the second set 26-24 to tie the match at one set apiece. SU fell behind 2-0 to start the set and trailed 12-8 at the midway point, but outscored the Griffins 7-3 knotting the set at 15 on a Cosgrove ace. Following a Cosgrove service error, the Golden Eagles scored four straight points capped off by a Jessica Diehl solo block as SU went on to take the set on a Jordan Alvey kill.

The Golden Eagles raced out to a 15-10 advantage in the third set, but Fontbonne rallied, outscoring SU 7-1 and took an 18-17 lead on an Emily Merick kill. A Victoria Heitzman kill tied the set at 18-18, but Fontbonne went on to win 25-21.

After falling behind 22-17 in the fourth set, Spalding played their way back into the game to tie the set at 23-23. A Fontbonne attack error gave Spalding their first lead of the set, but a bad set by Casey Wilkerson knotted the score at 24. Another attack error put SU up 25-24, but a Heitzman attack error and Sarah Thompson ball handling error made gave Fontbonne game point. April Fisher threw down a kill to tie the set at 26, but a Thompson attack error followed by a Claire Domian service ace gave Fontbonne the set and match.

E.C. Burkman led Spalding with 15 kills and Katelyn Cosgrove passed out 34 assists.

SPALDING 3 - IOWA WESLEYAN 0
Spalding bounced back to win the second game sweeping Iowa Wesleyan 25-11, 25-19, 25-20.

The Golden Eagles dominated the first set rolling to a 19-4 advantage following an Erin Downs kill and won the set on a Burkman service ace.

The second set was much closer, both teams went point for point until back-to-back April Fisher kills ignited a 4-0 Spalding run as the Golden Eagles took the second set 25-19 and a 2-0 advantage.

Similar to the second set, both teams played close and Spalding trailed 11-10, but two Jessica Diehl kills and a Burkman service ace were part of a 4-0 SU run that put the Golden Eagles ahead for good as they won the set 25-20 to sweep the match.
