Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – The Spalding University volleyball team split a doubleheader at Fontbonne University Saturday falling to the host Griffins, but bounced back to sweep Iowa Wesleyan to improve to 2-1 in SLIAC play.
SPALDING 1 - FONTBONNE 3Spalding lost the first set 25-20. The Golden Eagles trailed from start to finish, falling behind by as many as eight points following a
Katelyn Cosgrove service error, but SU battled back to cut the deficit to one point at 16-15 after a bad set by Fontbonne's Lynsey Wehrenberg. However, Fontbonne scored three consecutive points putting the game out of reach.
SU won the second set 26-24 to tie the match at one set apiece. SU fell behind 2-0 to start the set and trailed 12-8 at the midway point, but outscored the Griffins 7-3 knotting the set at 15 on a Cosgrove ace. Following a Cosgrove service error, the Golden Eagles scored four straight points capped off by a
Jessica Diehl solo block as SU went on to take the set on a
Jordan Alvey kill.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 15-10 advantage in the third set, but Fontbonne rallied, outscoring SU 7-1 and took an 18-17 lead on an Emily Merick kill. A
Victoria Heitzman kill tied the set at 18-18, but Fontbonne went on to win 25-21.
After falling behind 22-17 in the fourth set, Spalding played their way back into the game to tie the set at 23-23. A Fontbonne attack error gave Spalding their first lead of the set, but a bad set by
Casey Wilkerson knotted the score at 24. Another attack error put SU up 25-24, but a Heitzman attack error and
Sarah Thompson ball handling error made gave Fontbonne game point.
April Fisher threw down a kill to tie the set at 26, but a Thompson attack error followed by a Claire Domian service ace gave Fontbonne the set and match.
E.C. Burkman led Spalding with 15 kills and
Katelyn Cosgrove passed out 34 assists.
SPALDING 3 - IOWA WESLEYAN 0Spalding bounced back to win the second game sweeping Iowa Wesleyan 25-11, 25-19, 25-20.
The Golden Eagles dominated the first set rolling to a 19-4 advantage following an
Erin Downs kill and won the set on a Burkman service ace.
The second set was much closer, both teams went point for point until back-to-back
April Fisher kills ignited a 4-0 Spalding run as the Golden Eagles took the second set 25-19 and a 2-0 advantage.
Similar to the second set, both teams played close and Spalding trailed 11-10, but two
Jessica Diehl kills and a Burkman service ace were part of a 4-0 SU run that put the Golden Eagles ahead for good as they won the set 25-20 to sweep the match.
Jessica Diehl led the Golden Eagle attack with 13 kills and Cosgrove tallied 35 assists. Burkman led the defense with 13 digs and Fisher held down the net with two solo blocks and one block assist.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action September 26 when they return to Fontbonne for a rematch with the Griffins. The game is set to begin at 8:00 p.m. EST.
