Kerstin Hayes led the Lady Eagles basketball team to an 87-78 victory over Blackburn College Thursday scoring 26 points and going 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Spalding got up to its largest lead of the first half at 20 points after a three-pointer by
Kallie Ash made it a 30-10 game with 10:44 left in the first half.
The Golden Eagles would continue to play well throughout the remainder of the first half, maintaining a double-digit lead since the 16:54 mark of the first half when the score was 16-5. Spalding went into the locker room at the half leading by 19 after two free-throws by
Kerstin Hayes.
Spalding came out of the locker room hot, a
Hannah Washle jumper and layup by
Jessica Guy extended SU's lead to the largest of the game at 23 with 19:11 left to play.
They would preserve a comfortable double-digit lead through the majority of the second half until the 3:27 mark, when two free-throws by Blackburn's Danique Smith cut Spalding's lead to just nine points at 78-69.
After what seemed to be a blowout victory for Spalding, they found they're lead dwindle to just five points at 79-74 with 2:14 left in the game. When Blackburn resorted to fouling, the Lady Eagles came up big, making 8-10 free-throws to escape with an 87-78 victory.
Spalding took advantage of Blackburn's 20 turnovers, scoring 28 points off turnovers compared to only 10 for Blackburn.
The Lady Eagles will be back in competition Thursday, February 13 at Principia College at 7:00 p.m. EST.
