LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Brandon Gabriel and
Brandon Goeing combined for the 34 points to lead the Spalding University men's basketball team to an 80-63 victory over Transylvania Saturday afternoon.
Gabriel and Goeing scored 17 points apiece, and
Renaldo Moore added 15 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Alex Jones led the Pioneers with 17 points, while Jake Williams added 14 points.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start missing three of their first four shots allowing the Pioneers to jump out to a 9-3 lead at the 15 minute mark, and SU still trailed by six with a little under nine minutes left in the half. A
Renaldo Moore jumper with 7:43 left in the half jumpstarted an 8-2 Eagle run that gave SU their first lead of the game at 21-19. The two teams exchanged baskets over the next two minutes, but the Golden Eagles outscored the Pioneers 17-7 over the final three minutes to take a 40-30 lead into halftime.
Transy's Dillon Pulliam scored the first points of the second half to cut SU's lead to eight, but back-to-back jump shots from Gabriel and a Moore layup pushed SU's lead to 14 points, and the Eagles led by 16 with 8:07 to go. However, a Pioneers 8-2 run cut SU's lead to single digits at 67-59 with 4:11 remaining, but the Golden Eagles knocked down their free throws late to earn the win, 80-63.
Up next, the Golden Eagles open conference play at Greenville College Thursday, December 4 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
