Kerstin Hayes scored 22 points to lead the Spalding University Lady Eagles basketball team to a 69-54 victory at Webster University Thursday night.
Spalding got off to a strong start taking a quick 8-0 lead after a three-point basket by junior
Kallie Ash at the 7:28 mark.
Webster would recover, outscoring SU 12-2 over the next five minutes to take a 12-10 lead on a Courtney Pursley three-point play.
The game remained close throughout the rest of the first half with nine lead changes taking place. Junior
Hannah Washle hit a jumper to tie the game 26-26 with 3:01 left in the first half, but a three-point basket made by Webster's Ashley Brooks sent SU to the half trailing 28-33.
Webster kept the lead over the first five minutes of the second half, but a
Maya Hardin jump-shot gave the Golden Eagles a 40-39 lead with 13:02 left in the game.
With Spalding leading by two,
Jessica Guy made a jump shot at the 6:42 mark to spark a 14-0 run to push SU's lead to 65-49 with just 3:30 left in the game, and Spalding strolled to the 69-54 victory.
SU had a very strong defensive showing, taking away 12 steals on 20 Gorlok turnovers leading to 23 Spalding points off turnovers.
The Lady Eagles had five players score at least eight points. Hayes led the way with 22 points, as well as recording five rebounds, five steals and four rebounds. Guy followed Hayes with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Ash scored nine points, and
Hannah Washle and
Kayla Riggs scored eight points apiece.
Cassie Endicott paced Webster with 12 points, while Courney Pursley scored 11 points and Ashley Brooks added 10 points.
The Lady Eagles will be back in competition Saturday afternoon at Blackburn College. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m., ET.
