Box Score Kerstin Hayes scored her 1000th point to help the Spalding University women's basketball team defeat Eureka College 65-55 Thursday evening. With the win Spalding improves 3-7 overall and 3-1 in the SLIAC.
Kelsey Shoemake and Caty Eeten combined for eight of Eureka's first 11 points as the Red Devils jumped out to an 11-4 advantage to start the game.
Jessica Guy knocked down a jumper, starting a 19-0 SU run over the five minutes.
Maya Hardin capped of the run with a layup giving the Golden Eagles a 23-11 lead with 6:29 remaining in the half.
Eureka outscored SU 12-6 to close the half, but the Golden Eagles held a 29-23 lead at halftime.
The Golden Eagles started to pull away to start the second half.
Kerstin Hayes drilled a three-pointer at the 15:29 mark, increasing Spalding's lead to 13 at 40-27.
Eureka would fight back, cutting Spalding's lead to eight points, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 10-4 run to push SU's lead to 14. The Lady Eagles went on to win the game 65-55.
Spalding outshot Eureka 41.0% to 33.9% for the game. The Golden Eagles also held a plus 12 advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Red Devils 47-35.
Guy paced the Lady Eagles with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Kelsey Shoemake led the Red Devils with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior guard
Kerstin Hayes reached a career milestone Thursday. With a three-pointer at the 15:29 mark in the second half, Hayes became the seventh women's basketball player in school history to eclipse 1,000 points. Hayes currently sits at seventh on Spalding's all-time scorers list with 1,004 points.
