Men's Soccer Beats Berea, Earns First Win Of Season

Box Score

The Spalding University Men's Soccer team earned a 3-1 win over Berea College last night, tallying their first win of the 2013 season and bringing their record to 1-1-0 on the year.

The game was postponed to Tuesday night after several weather delays in Berea on Monday forced the two teams to reschedule.

SU started the game brightly, Trevor Bruner coming close twice in the first two minutes. After a handful of other opportunities, including a Justin Toller breakaway that was deflected wide by Berea goalkeeper Matt Nelson, it was Berea who would strike first against the run of play. BC's Stone Ratcliff hit a low-drive past goalkeeper Logan Spencer with 15:21 remaining in the first half.

It would take Spalding just five minutes to respond. Bruner scored his first goal of the season when he rocketed a free-kick into the upper-90 with 10:16 left on the clock in the first half. The two teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Jackson Cantrell would score his first goal of the season when he sent a low curler off the post and into the back of the net. Bruner picked up the assist on the play to put Spalding up 2-1.

Then, with 20 minutes left in the game, Abdullahi Abdullahi would seal the game for Spalding. After receiving a pass from Ryan Glynn, Abdullahi slid a low shot past Nelson to put SU up 3-1.

On the night, Spalding outshot Berea 21-8 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"We played with a lot of energy tonight and our work ethic was fantastic from the first whistle," Head Coach Adam Boyer commented after the game. "Berea was very disciplined and we knew it would take an entire team effort over 90 minutes to earn our first win of the season. This was exactly the type of performance we needed and puts us in a great spot heading into the weekend," he finished.

Spalding travels to Danville KY this weekend for the 24th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic at Centre College.
