Women's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Defeat At Greenville

The Spalding women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat in their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opener Saturday at Greenville College.

The Golden Eagles gave up two goals in the first half. Greenville's Maureen Murphy took a pass from Kelsey Panzau and slipped a shot past SU keeper Kelsey Kaiser for the first goal of the game. The Panthers took a 2-0 advantage when Panzau found the back of the net in the 32nd minute.

Spalding cut the deficit to one when Demi West found Katie Ballard who fired a shot past Greenville keeper Heidi Koehl to make the score 2-1 with thirty minutes to play.

The Golden Eagles were reduced to 10 players after sophomore midfielder Hannah Freytag received a red card at the 65:04 mark and SU was unable to tie the game.

Spalding held a 12-9 shot advantage and a 6-3 corner advantage for the game.

SU goalkeeper Kelsey Kaiser recorded four saves.

Spalding is now 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference. The Golden Eagles are back in action this Thursday, October 3 in a neutral site match versus Iowa Wesleyan College at 8:00 p.m., ET at Principia College.
