The Spalding University women's soccer team had their two game win streak and undefeated season come to an end as they dropped their home opener to Hanover College 1-0 in overtime Saturday.

The play was back and forth early on in the game with the best opportunity coming just ten minutes into the match. Freshman forward Tori Smith dribbled around the Hanover defender and pushed her shot just wide of the goal. Then at the 34 minute mark, sophomore midfielder Hannah Freytag fired a shot past the Hanover keeper and onto the cross bar. The game would go into half-time tied at 0-0.

The second half played out very evenly as the majority of play would be in the midfield. With a little under 15 minutes left in the game, Spalding would increase the pressure and create two opportunities to take the lead. After some nice combination play between Tori Smith and sophomore forward Katie Ballard, Smith played a low cross into the Hanover box that bounced off two defenders. Eventually the ball would roll towards senior midfielder Baileigh Frantz, who came crashing into the box and had a first time shot on goal. Frantz's shot would take a deflection off of a Hanover defender, only to be pulled off the line by the Hanover goalkeeper.

Spalding would have another chance at the 86 minute mark when freshman midfielder Dee Dee Sliter played a ball in behind the defense for Katie Ballard to run onto. The Hanover goalkeeper would come out of her box only to miss-kick her clearance right to Baileigh Frantz. Frantz, about 35 yards out from goal, fired a shot that looked to have beaten the keeper, but the Hanover goalkeeper tracked back towards her own goal and managed to get a fingertip on the shot deflecting the ball wide of the goal.

After the end of regulation, the game was tied at 0-0.

Hanover pressed high right from the start of overtime having a shot smack off of the right post just minutes into the first half of overtime. With less than a minute left in the first overtime, Hanover's Rachel Alvis found the back of the net with 21 seconds remaining to push Hanover past Spalding 1-0 for the golden goal victory.

"I was really happy with how hard the girls played today. I knew Hanover was going to be a very tough team and for us to go out and play with them for 90 plus minutes really says a lot about this team" Coach Rayburn stated. "Although the stat lines will read a little in favor of Hanover, I think we had an opportunity to win the match today. We were very unfortunate not to find the back of the net late in the game, but that's soccer you" Coach Rayburn finished.

The lady Golden Eagles will be back in action Wednesday, September 18 as they host Anderson University. Kick-off is set for 6:00pm at Christian Academy of Louisville. For live updates, follow @Spaldingwsoccer on Twitter.
