Women's Basketball Falls To Iowa Wesleyan, 71-64

The Spalding University women's basketball team dropped to 1-1 in the SLIAC and 1-4 overall after losing to Iowa Wesleyan 71-64 Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles and Tigers exchanged the lead or tied the score six times over the first nine minutes of the game. Kerstin Hayes pushed SU ahead when she drilled a three-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 17-14 lead with 10:21 to play in the first.

Iowa Wesley finished the half on a hot streak from beyond the arc, knocking down six three-pointers to outscore the Lady Eagles 21-6 to close the half, to send SU into the half trailing 35-23.

Freshman Kelly Coburn got SU back in the game midway through the second half, connecting on three consecutive three-pointers to cut the Spalding deficit to five with 10:31 to play.

A Hannah Washle three-pointer and Jessica Guy free throw got Spalding within four at 62-58 with 3:24 left in the game, but the Tigers knocked down free throws down the stretch to escape with a 71-64 win.

Spalding had thee player score in double figures. Kerstin Hayes led the way with 15 points and a team-high five assists, while Kelly Coburn dropped a career-high 14 points, and Dee Dee Sliter added 10 points.

Jessica Guy recorded double-digit rebounds for the third straight game, pulling down a team-high 10 boards.

Dakota Flesner led Iowa Wesleyan with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

SU finished the game with a 34.3 field goal percentage, while making 10-25 from three-point range.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, December 14 when they host No. 1 ranked defending National Champion DePauw University. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m., ET at Derek Smith Gymnasium (DSG).
