Women's Basketball Beats Principia, 83-39

Jessica Guy scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, recording her second straight double-double to lead the Spalding University women's basketball team past Principia College 83-39 Thursday evening. With the win SU improves to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in the SLIAC.

After a scoreless first two minutes, Kerstin Hayes knocked down a jumper to ignite a 10-0 Spalding run. Over the next five minutes SU outscored Principia 17-5 to open up a 27-7 lead and went into the locker room at halftime leading 45-24.

SU started the second half on a 12-3 run capped off by Caitlin Montgomery jumper to give SU a 57-27 lead with 14:30 to play. The Spalding defense held Principia to 12 points over the remainder of the game as they breezed to an 83-39 win.

The Lady Eagles had an impressive night on the defensive end, holding Principia to a 26.1% field goal percentage, while forcing 29 Panther turnovers and tallying 12 steals.

Freshman Forward Caitlin Montgomery had a solid game for SU, scoring 13 points, while connecting on 6-8 (75%) of her field goal attempts. Kerstin Hayes also scored in double figures, scoring 11 points on the night.

Rachel Perea led the Panthers with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Up next, the Lady Eagles will take on Iowa Wesleyan Saturday, December 7 in a neutral-site game hosted by Fontbonne University. Tipoff is 2:00 p.m., ET.
